Support SCM: Letter from National Student Rep

December 9, 2007 (Advent 2)

Dear Friends,

LAST MONTH I ATTENDED MY VERY FIRST SCM BOARD MEETING.

It was a surreal, exciting, unifying, inspiring, and overwhelmingly encouraging experience. What stuck out most to me were the many stories that popped up around the table, from students across the country.

One of SCM’s greatest gifts is that there are so many different stories from so many different people - each local unit is so distinctive - it’s absolutely wild and wonderful that we are able to come together, unite in solidarity, and support, encourage, and help each other as a real cohesive team.

The SCM, though small, is certainly a visionary and growing voice across Canada, and one that is urgently needed in these challenging times.

Here are some stories from just this last semester:

  • A new student group has joined SCM’s network. S.A.L.T. (Students Acting for a Liberating Theology) is actively engaged in liberation theology at McGill University in Montreal.
  • 16 students participated in the SCM’s annual Pilgrimage to the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia (see photo, right), where 25,000 gathered for human rights and social justice. We organize the trip as a spiritual pilgrimage which includes stops at numerous justice & faith communities along the way.
  • The University of Victoria unit organized a number of well-attended pro-Burma events and vigils, while the University of Winnipeg SCM hosted a Queer & Christian Festival, which included a practical hands-on workshop on stopping homophobia.
  • Also, thanks to the work of SCM in Fredericton, there are now many LGBT positive Jesus buttons adorning bags and coats in that city!
  • We are looking forward to our National Conference, in Halifax this year, on Weaving Threads of Solidarity - linking global and local, and recommitting ourselves to international solidarity. I could go on, there are so many more stories!

We are a grassroots network of unique, diverse students who are unified under a common cause and with a common passion. I wish that all SCMers nation-wide - including our valued senior and superfriends - could come and hear the stories of each local unit.

We definitely have a diverse group of students making up this movement. It is encouraging, inspiring, and sometimes frightening! We do some risky, but worthwhile and important things. SCM definitely makes a huge impact in people’s lives, as it has mine - especially since there are so few progressive faith voices on campus.

I hope you take time to enjoy these and other stories in our latest issue of All Things New.

SCM Canada certainly has an important role to play, and I believe we are carrying out that role with passion, integrity, and success. We humbly ask that you consider financially supporting the SCM Canada movement. There is still much work to be done, and many students to mobilize. We are in need of funds in order to keep moving forward with building units up in new cities and increase our national presence.

We ask that you prayerfully consider making a donation to the SCM. Your sacrifice will ensure that the important work of the SCM continue long into the future!

Thank you for your part in making SCM what it is today - a strong movement of diverse students passionate about social justice and faith. You are in intricate part of what makes our movement strong.

Thank you very much for your support. It means so much to us!
