SCM Canada Speaks out Against Racist Bill C-49
01 December 2010
The Student Christian Movement of Canada adds our voice to the numerous organizations and individuals concerned about the proposed amendments to Bill C49: an Act to Amend the Criminal Code.
We speak out against the exploitation of any person without their informed consent, and stand against human trafficking in all of its forms. However, we do not believe that the proposed changes to Bill C49 will result in a decrease in human trafficking. Instead of helping protect individuals at risk, we believe that this Bill will increase the risk of injustice and undemocratic treatment of refugees seeking asylum within Canada. This Bill, which allows unquestioned arbitrary detention, is discriminatory and racist in nature and violates people’s basic human rights.
The Student Christian Movement of Canada believes that all peoples have the right to live in a safe environment, and we insist that Canada adopt an open border policy to all refugee claimants. May we who live in such abundance practice radical hospitality to all those who are fleeing from violence.
