JOB OPENING: Staff Associate
Do you have skills in administration that you’d like to offer? SCM will be hiring a part-time Staff Associate to work in our General Office in Toronto in September, focused on administrative and office tasks, to work alongside our General Secretary, bookkeeper and volunteer student leadership.

- Term of Employment: one year contract, starting September 15, 2010, with the possibility of an extension

The SCM or Student Christian Movement is a progressive student movement engaged in social justice and spirituality. We are a non-dogmatic community of diverse belief systems where friendship, critical thinking and political action flourish. Since 1921, students have led the SCM in exploring and challenging the Christian tradition and its meaning in society and culture.
The successful applicant will work as a team with the present General Secretary located in Toronto, supporting SCM’s grassroots work at both the national and regional levels, especially its local units, committees, and programs.
The Staff Associate will be accountable to the Board of Directors and the General Council of the SCM while also working in close collaboration with the General Secretary, located in Toronto. The General Secretary and the Staff Associate will negotiate a more detailed division of responsibilities at commencement of the contract.
Tasks and Responsibilities
1. Office Administration
- Ensure administration of the office in Toronto including mail-outs, correspondence, phone and email communications, database management, and filing
- Assist the work of bookkeeper under the guidance of the General Secretary and the Treasurer
- Maintain data for the pre-authorized remittance system
- Pay invoices twice a month
- Make deposits
- Process direct deposit & credit card donations
- Manage tax receipting process
- Work with General Secretaries to assist with mailing of SCM publications
- In conjunction with the General Secretaries and the Board, ensure timely and complete filing of key legal and organizational files: CRA filings, yearly audited statements, staff contracts, Records of Employment, board and committee reports
- In conjunction with the General Secretaries, maintain SCM national and local unit files
- Pay invoices twice a month
- Organize deposits
- Enter data and maintain current financial records
- Assist the work of the Treasurer and Endowment Committee by means of accurate reporting
3. Communications
- Administer the scmcanada.org web site and provide support to and facilitate student participation on site
- Moderate and update the various SCM e-mail lists
- Maintain database and update it before major mailings (fall mail-out to campuses, ATN, Project Phoenix newsletter, etc)
- Ensure that local, regional and national information is being shared through e-mail, phone and other forms of communication
4. Support for General Council and General Secretaries
- Provide administrative support to national programs, such as international solidarity, SCM General Conferences, local unit training
- Provide administrative and logistical organisation for General Council, Board of Directors, and other meetings
- Provide on-site support to General Council and Board of Directors meetings
- Offer assistance to committees, if requested
- Provide support to SCM publications such as All Things New, Epistle journals
- Assist local units with program work, communications, etc
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Board of Directors or in conjunction with the General Secretary.
Qualifications
- Awareness and support of Student Christian Movement of Canada
- Familiarity with university or college campus work and/or student groups
- Experience in an office setting and with administrative work
- Experience with accounting programs and basic bookkeeping duties
Working hours/week
- Flexibility, week to week, can be arranged for work time, although it is hoped that the Staff Associate will work a minimum of two days in the office during regular office hours.
