Climate justice now!

by David Ball
SCM General Secretary

Today is an important day – the opening of major climate talks in Copenhagen. And with the Canadian government openly refusing to be a leader on tackling the climate crisis, it’s time to turn up the heat – let’s call on them to “change the attitude, not the climate!”

In only a few hours, we’re going to be ‘officially’ launching our Solidarity Statement on Climate Justice in Toronto, and we’re asking EVERYONE to sign onto it as a manifesto of our commitment to action for change (the good kind of change, not the climate kind!)

SCM is overcoming our technophobia and pushing climate justice through an online Climate Justice Manifesto, a new “podcast”/radio/podcast5, Twitter and our (new) Facebook fan group (which you should join if you haven’t – we’re replacing our old Group page).

Not to mention an official media launch of our Solidarity Statement on Climate justice in Toronto.

Sign the manifesto, share it with your friends, and join in actions next Saturday in your area. And there are actions happening all over Canada and Greenpeace is on the roof of Parliament as I write.

The other plug here is that SCM is making an ironic though sincere foray into the world of consumer capitalism.

Are you looking for books, CDs or films for Christmas?

While we heartily endorse initiatives like Buy Nothing Christmas , SCM is trying our hand at corporate capitalism in an experiment with online fundraising. Yes, the irony – SCM is skimming 4-8% off all purchases from a wide selection of online orders. So if you’re shopping ANYWAY, why not support SCM at the same time?

Our online Bookroom (through evil corporate megalith Amazon) offers a hand-picked, wide selection of:

  • Books on everything from Liberation theology to activism & strategy, empire, nonviolence, interfaith and spirituality.
  • The newest books on Indigenous liberation theology
  • Activist strategy and how-to guides, such as Rhetoric for Radicals and An Action a Day Keeps Global Capitalism at Bay.
  • Social and political nonfiction, including Derrick Jensen, Joanna Macy, Starhawk, Taiaiake Alfred, and many more
  • More than 100 CDs from socially conscious artists like Ani Difranco, Wailin’ Jennys, Cobalt Season, meWithoutYou, Dar Williams, The National, Tegan & Sara, Tracy Chapman, Kinnie Starr, Noam Chomsky, Dead Prez, the Weakerthans, Propagandhi, Nina Simone (yes pretty much any genre)
  • Relevant DVDs to gift or screen in your area, including Fourth World War, The Take, The Corporation, Amandla!, Food Inc., Fierce Light, Contact, This is What Democracy Looks Like, and many more.

Anything we don’t have, you can suggest and we’ll add it. If you’re buying books, CDs and DVDs ANYWAY this season (or beyond), why not give SCM a slice off the corporate pie so we can subvert the pie itself? (Irony? Yes).
