THE SCM TODAY *

June 20, 2008

Why does the SCM have such a hold on Senior Friends like me? Why do we continue support after all these years?

I think it is the vision we grasped as students – the vision that we carry to our grave. We rejoice in seeing the same vision in SCMers today: the inextricable link between faith and advocacy. I see personal salvation taken up into community salvation.

I believe that there is no other – absolutely no other organization on campus – any campus – that carries out the mission – that makes the seamless link between faith and social action.

I like what the SCM says. I like what it does. I see the transformative action of the SCM in young people. What else do we need? The SCM is always the same, but always new and refreshing, as the issues change but the vision and commitment abides

I want to throw the torch to the new generation. This is a very good thing to do with our money. It’s in our veins. We know our money is well used, consistent with SCM’s vision. Bequests are important because the continuity of the SCM is important. We older ones can’t do as much physically, but if we can share whatever we gained in this world with SCM, we can be certain in the knowledge that it’s supporting SCM’s good work. This makes it possible for SCM to be student-run. We’re a cloud of witnesses – that’s what we are.

That is why I plan a bequest to the SCM. If we all do this, the SCM will move from strength to strength. If we leave what we can, we shall swell the coffers to ensure its mission. For myself, if I do this, I can rest in peace.
